Auli Ski Slopes – My explorations
– By Mohit Bangari
I live and teach on these slopes every winter, and trust me, they are some of the most beautiful in the country. In this blog I want to share with you everything about Auli’s ski slopes in very simple words, so that you know what to expect when you come here.
Auli is in Uttarakhand, near Joshimath. Our ski area is spread between 2,500 metres to about 3,050 metres. From the top, you see some of the biggest Himalayan peaks like Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dunagiri, Hathi–Ghoda and many more.
The main skiing stretch here is about 3 km long with nearly 500 metres vertical drop. This is considered excellent even by international standards, and that’s why Auli has become India’s top skiing destination.
The Four Famous Slopes of Auli
We have four well-known slopes here. Let me explain them in the way I introduce them to my guests.
Temple Track (Red) – 400 m
This is the beginner’s slope. Short, safe and perfect for first slides. Here you will learn how to balance, stop, and do your first snowplough turns.8 No. Track (Blue) – 800 m
A bit longer and wider. Once you are confident with stopping and turning, we move here. This slope is excellent for learning linked turns and speed control.10 No. Slope (White) – 900 m
Smooth, gentle, and slightly longer. This is where you start feeling the real flow of skiing. Most people gain a lot of confidence here.Composite Slope – 3.1 km
This is our pride. Long, scenic, with changing pitch. Once you are comfortable on the smaller slopes, this becomes your reward run. Skiing here with the Himalayas all around you is something you’ll never forget.
Lifts in Auli
Earlier we all used the Joshimath to Auli ropeway, which was one of the longest in India. But right now it is closed because of the Joshimath landslide. So currently, guests reach Auli by road.
Inside Auli, we have three lifts:
One chair car (4 seats each, about 800 metres long).
Two ski lifts (bar type), which are mainly used by skiers to go up the slopes quickly.
These lifts make moving around on the slopes smooth and save a lot of energy for skiing.
How I Train People on These Slopes
I always take guests step by step:
First-time learners start on the Temple Track.
Beginners who can turn and stop move to the 8 No. Track.
Strong beginners go to the 10 No. Slope to get rhythm.
Intermediates enjoy the Composite Slope as their big achievement run.
This step-by-step ladder keeps things safe and fun.
How the Slopes Feel
Temple Track: Friendly and short.
8 No. Track: Relaxing and wide.
10 No. Slope: Smooth flow, confidence builder.
Composite: Long, scenic, absolutely unforgettable.
Weather Tips from Me
Weather in the mountains changes fast. Morning snow can be hard, and by noon it may turn soft. Sometimes fog or wind comes in suddenly. I always check the snow conditions with a warm-up run before taking my guests higher.
My Conclusions
Whether you want to take your first ever ski lesson or you dream of gliding down the 3 km Composite Slope, Auli is the perfect place. I will make it simple, safe and enjoyable for you. Come with an open mind, and go back with a lifetime memory.
